An interesting report which covers 'Evolution of graphene growth on Cu and Ni studied by carbon isotope labeling' can be found at arxiv.org/ftp/arxiv/papers/0907/0907.1859.pdf The paper demonstrates that Graphene growth on Copper is by surface adsorption whereas on Nickel it is by segregation-precipitation.
